Prominence structures were shown to serve crucial functions in speech perception. Of the four dimensions of prominence (frequency, time, intensity, spectrum), intensity is the most disputed one. Czech speakers of English exhibit different behaviour from the native speakers, but neither of the groups treats intensity in stressed syllables uniformly across the lexicon. The stress placement on the first syllable, which is canonical in the Czech language, does not lend any advantage to English learners for initially stressed English words. However, many voice professionals in the Czech Republic do not come from a phonetic-based education. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine literature used in university courses focused on vocal skills development in three fields - public speaking, stage speech and singing - as to their phonetic grounding. The aim was to establish the main themes in university courses and evaluate to which extent the methods presented are informed by phonetic knowledge in five operational domains - fundamental frequency, sound spectrum, amplitude, temporal characteristics and articulation. Twenty publications (at least 6 in each field) were chosen from university curricula. Based on recurring themes across the publications, a set of categories was identified for each of the fields examined, into which the publications' contents were sorted. Relevant categories were then assessed in terms of awareness of the phonetic domains (above). Publications of all fields referenced phonetic domains, however, the extent to which the domains were presented varied. Public speaking publications focused mainly on elocution and orthoepy, thus drawing mainly on knowledge of the phonetic articulatory domain. Other domains were referenced in sections focused on intonation (fo), loudness (amplitude), rhythm and speech tempo (t) and voice resonance (spectrum). However, the publications showed varying degrees of knowledge in these domains, some of them only acknowledging all prosodic properties jointly as "voice modulation". Publications on stage speech paid attention to the articulatory domain along with other topics such as voice resonance and timbre (spectrum), intonation and pitch (fo) speech tempo and rhythm (t) or loudness (amplitude). Interestingly, about half of the publications were prevalently focused on elocution, while others focused mainly on the other topics mentioned, one omitting the articulatory domain entirely. Singing publications addressed phonetic domains in various topics such as articulation, voice range (fo), voice resonance (spectrum) or dynamics (amplitude). The temporal domain was discussed only very scarcely. Many topics and subtopics (e.g. voice registers) focused on multiple phonetic domains at once. Discussion of the spectral domain was more prevalent than in the other two fields, and most publications showed a satisfactory phonetic knowledge base.}, keywords = {vocal skills; public speaking; singing voice; stage speech; phonetic domains}, address = {{Santander}}, pages = {230-230}, language = {English} } @article{318709, author = {Volín, Jan}, title = {{Papers in Phonetics and Speech Processing}}, journal = {The Phonetician}, number = {2002-II}, year = {2003}, abstract = {Review of a collection of studies on phonetics and speech processing.}, volume = {86}, issn = {0741-6164}, pages = {74-76}, language = {English} } @article{318852, author = {Janíková, Jitka and Volín, Jan}, title = {{The Linguistic Basis of Articulation Rate Variation in Czech}}, journal = {Slovo a {s}lovesnost}, number = {1}, year = {2003}, abstract = {Článek rozebírá monografii věnovanou variacím artikulačního tempa v češtině.}, volume = {64}, issn = {0037-7031}, pages = {69-72}, language = {Czech} } @article{320570, author = {Volín, Jan}, title = {{The Linguistic Basis of Articulation Rate Variation in Czech}}, journal = {Phonetician}, number = {1}, year = {2002}, abstract = {Assesses a detailed study of the articulation rate variation in Czech.}, volume = {85}, issn = {0741-6164}, pages = {63-65}, language = {English} } @article{589145, author = {Volín, Jan}, title = {{Vývoj kodifikace české výslovnosti}}, journal = {Naše {ř}eč}, number = {5}, year = {2020}, abstract = {Jedná se o časopiseckou recenzi nedávno vyšlé monografie, tj. o kritický, informovaný pohled na její obsah. It may be claimed that these glottal elements disturb the smooth flow of speech. Word stress in Czech is entirely different from English, it has a fixed position, a delimitative function and rather impalpable acoustic manifestations. Alternations in the realization of word stress were analyzed by measuring the ratios or differences of acoustic correlates of prominence: duration, fundamental frequency, sound pressure level and spectral slope. Since word stress is a relational phenomenon, these characteristics were measured in two adjacent syllables one of which was a canonical stress bearer. The results reveal a clear difference between native and non-native treatment of word stress in all parameters examined. In the non-native sample distinct interferences of L1 across the two groups were detected: the subjects displayed different exploitation of duration, spectral slope and sound pressure level (SPL) with relation to their proficiency in L2 English. A careful observation of the current Czech speech suggests otherwise. This paper presents a perceptual experiment in which Czech speakers evaluated two contrastive forms of the interrogative melody, specifically the one with a late peak modelled after statements (as suggested by some authors), and the one with an early peak modelled after our empirical data collected previously. The contours were analysed first simply in terms of their realisational space and then in more detail with functional principal component analysis and Legendre polynomials. The results indicated that the domain relevant for the production of intonation patterns is the sonorous part of the syllabic rime, which showed comparable values of F0 range across all syllable types. In many languages a word beginning with a vowel can be preceded by a glottal stop or a short period of creaky voice. However, languages differ in the extent of use and functions of this glottalization: it may be used to mark the word boundary, for instance, or to add special prominence to the word. The aim of the experiment was to find out whether the presence of the glottal element can influence reaction times in a word-monitoring paradigm. Users of different languages - Slovak and Czech learners of English, as well as native speakers of English - were participating in perception testing so that the influence of the mother tongue could be determined. The results confirm the effect of both glottalization and the L1 of the listeners. In addition, a significant effect of test item manipulations was found. It is seen as the basic constitutive unit in modelling human linguistic competence. However, supremacy in our conscious attempt to understand production and perception of speech needs not presuppose primacy in the domain of natural processes of speech behaviour. The syllable is often viewed as the phoneme's closest competitor at the level of unconscious neurolinguistic planning and decoding. Reaction time (RT) measurements, based on the assumption that longer RTs mean a more complex or higher-order processing, have been used successfully (and frequently) in various psycholinguistic experiments. In our study we used a word-monitoring paradigm to investigate whether the brain processes phonemes or syllables faster when recognizing words. For that purpose we broke the speech signal with short stretches of silence and, also, used the English language for Czech listeners to add extra cognitive load to the task, which should underscore potential differences in the outcome. The results showed that phone segmentation exerts greater demands on perceptual mechanisms than syllable segmentation. Utterances of 24 speakers (7–9 syllables long) taken from short dialogues were used to see whether general prosodic patterning determined by the intonational grammar of the language and the individual production habits of the speakers can be captured by computational means. The three methods exploited were: k-means clustering (KMC), polynomial regression analysis (PRA), and functional principal component analysis (FPCA). The numerical outputs of the methods are confronted with human perception of the contour in both auditory and visual domains. The results suggest that the observed contour properties are reflected by all three methods reasonably well: phonetically interpretable outcomes can be achieved by each of them. All of the methods showed substantial sensitivity to speaker and vowel identity in particular. Nevertheless, most of the methods were also able to discriminate among prominent and non-prominent realizations of the vowels. The difference between sums of energy in two adjacent frequency bands separated by a floating pivot locked to the value of the second formant proved to be the most successful measure. On the contrary, linear regression of the spectrum performed worst. Also, exclusion of the fundamental frequency band decreased performance of the methods significantly. Therefore, the primary aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of ageing on vowel articulation, as the previous research revealed contradictory findings. The secondary aim was to provide normative acoustic data for all Czech monophthongs. Methods The database consisted of 100 healthy speakers (50 men and 50 women) aged between 20 and 90. Acoustic characteristics, including vowel duration, vowel space area (VSA), fundamental frequency (f o), and the first to fourth formant frequencies (F 1-F 4) of 10 Czech vowels were extracted from a reading passage. In addition, the articulation rate was calculated from the entire duration of the reading passage. Results Age-related changes in pitch were sex-dependent, while age-related alterations in F 2/a/, F 2/u/, VSA, and vowel duration seemed to be sex-independent. In particular, we observed a clear lowering of f o with age for women, but no change for men. With regard to formants, we found lowering of F 2/a/ and F 2/u/ with increased age, but no statistically significant changes in F 1, F 3, or F 4 frequencies with advanced age. Although the alterations in F 1 and F 2 frequencies were rather small, they appeared to be in a direction against vowel centralization, resulting in a significantly greater VSA in the older population. The greater VSA was found to be related partly to longer vowel duration. Conclusions Alterations in vowel formant frequencies across several decades of adult life appear to be small or in a direction against vowel centralization, thus indicating the good preservation of articulatory precision in older speakers.}, keywords = {Aging; Czech; Formant; Vowel; Acoustic analysis; Fundamental frequency}, volume = {35}, issn = {0892-1997}, doi = {10.1016/j.jvoice.2020.02.022}, pages = {931.e21-931.e33}, language = {English} } @article{617649, author = {Volín, Jan and Bořil, Tomáš}, title = {{Individualita mluvčího v užití základní hlasové frekvence při přednesu básní}}, journal = {Naše {ř}eč}, number = {3}, year = {2022}, abstract = {Základní frekvence (f0) je považována za významný rys akustické struktury řečového signálu. First, earlier research has been prevalently concerned with central tendencies while variation was mostly perceived as an auxiliary result. However, information about data dispersion is essential for proper modelling and experimental design. Therefore, the present study provides reference values for some of the tempo metrics of variation that pertain to (a) between-genre differences, (b) within-genre differences, (c) inter-speaker differences, and (d) intra-speaker differences. Second, we tested the claim that faster tempi lead to fewer prosodic breaks in spoken texts. This claim had been supported by studies where a respondent was asked to produce the same text at various rates. We, on the other hand, pose a question of the number of prosodic breaks in speakers who are fast or slow inherently. The material used in the study represents two genres. Apart from providing the quantifications, the outcomes suggest, for example, that the predisposition of individual speakers to produce fast or slow tempi differs between the two genres. The fastest speakers in news reading were not necessarily the fastest in poetry reciting. This result points at specific behaviour in different situations and invites caution concerning the idea of hard-wired speaking stereotypes in individuals. Also, the correlation between speakers' rates and the number of phrases they produced was significant only in news reading, not in poetry reciting. In line with the absence of devoicing in Czech secondary school textbooks, the results provide insight into the interplay between language proficiency and pronunciation details in L2 acquisition.}, keywords = {voicing; devoicing; aspiration; sonorants; foreign language}, volume = {21}, issn = {1731-7533}, doi = {10.18778/1731-7533.21.4.06}, pages = {443-459}, language = {English} } @incollection{113053, author = {Volín, Jan}, editor = {Malá, Markéta and Šaldová, Pavlína}, title = {{On the significance of the temporal structuring of speech}}, journal = {...for thy speech bewrayeth thee}, series = {1st ed}, year = {2010}, abstract = {The study deals with the temporal structure of speech, specifically the metrical and rhythmical patterns.}, keywords = {temporal structure; rhythm; metre; phonetics}, publisher = {{Filozofická fakulta UK}}, address = {{Praha}}, isbn = {978-80-7308-299-4}, pages = {289-305}, language = {English} } @incollection{316120, author = {Volín, Jan}, title = {{F0 declination in Czech and English breath-groups}}, journal = {AUC Philologica1/2004, Phonetica Pragensia X}, series = {1st ed}, year = {2004}, abstract = {Compares intonational downtrends in read Czech and English.}, publisher = {{Karolinum}}, address = {{Praha}}, isbn = {80-246-0859-6}, pages = {125-136}, language = {English} } @incollection{316483, author = {Palková, Zdena and Volín, Jan}, title = {{The influence of the acoustic context on the perception of ambiguous syllable chains}}, journal = {AUC Philologica1/2004, Phonetica Pragensia X}, series = {1st ed}, year = {2004}, abstract = {A set of test was designed to fing out which acoustic clues help people find word boundaries in strings of phonemes with two possible meanings.}, publisher = {{Karolinum}}, address = {{Praha}}, isbn = {80-246-0859-6}, pages = {47-55}, language = {English} } @incollection{316699, author = {Palková, Zdena and Veroňková, Jitka and Volín, Jan}, title = {{Výzkum prozodických charakteristik češtiny relevantních pro systematickou materiálovou analýzu mluvené řeči}}, journal = {Hlasové technologie v podpoře informační společnosti (GA ČR 102/02/0124)}, series = {1. vyd}, year = {2004}, abstract = {Zpráva o aktivitách v rámci fonetického výzkumu prozodie zaměřeného na interdisciplinární řešení problematiky hlasových technologií.}, publisher = {{ČVUT}}, address = {{Praha}}, isbn = {80-01-02957-3}, pages = {29-31}, language = {Czech} }
